Computer Science (CS) Industry Steering Board

September 24, 2026

We have recently re-launched the Heriot-Watt Industry Steering Board event and had a wonderful time with business and industry partners. Heriot-Watt is committed to making industry and business a key stakeholder in both our teaching and research. Especially at a time when recent technology is upending a lot of assumptions about what the next generation of computer scientists and researchers will be doing.

Alistair McConnell, CS Head of Department, gave a insightful overview of the research and teaching work we are doing in the department. Highlights included research applying deep learning for Parkinson’s Disease detection and Heriot-Watt’s brand new course in game development and production .

In my role as Associate Executive Dean of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, I presented ways industry and business can engage and collaborate with CS at Heriot-Watt. This includes internships, fast tracked consultancy and PhD sponsorship through the EPSRC DLA program .

Also a big shout out for Nancie Gunsan and Simona Frenda who presented the work on Support Buddy , a commercialisation project aiming to protect woman from abuse on social media. Also big thanks to Claudia Cavalluzzo from Venture Cafe Edinburgh for attending and talking with attendees about the wondeerful community building they are doing nearby in the Endinburgh Futures Institute.

We also enjoyed a superb cake from A La Carte Bruntsfield. Yum!
